Are you new to the diagnosis of BPD and have questions or concerns about therapy? Please post those questions here and hopefully others in therapy now or who have had therapy (along with myself) will reply and you will find some support here as you begin your journey to getting better. Smiley

I have an audio program available that is called BPD for Beginners

In this audio program, Borderline Personality Disorder For Beginners, A.J. Mahari, a woman who has recovered from BPD and who is a life coach, talks to those who are newly diagnosed and searching for more understanding about what Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) really is and what it means for you in your life. Are you new to the diagnosis of BPD? Do you think you might have BPD? Have you known for sometime that you have BPD but you haven't really sought to face it or deal with it? Perhaps you are searching again for ways to understand more and to gain awareness so that you can address your pain and address the reality that your emotional life is one of suffering and that your relationships are troubled or not working?

No matter where you are coming from today in seeking more understanding about BPD celebrate that you are starting at a new beginning. A new beginning to make your life better. It takes courage and is an active choice that you can make.

Included in this Audio Program:

Track 1: 70 Minutes - What is Borderline Personality Disorder?
Track 2: 37 Minutes - What Causes BPD and what does that mean for recovery?
Track 3: 50 Minutes - Can I learn to manage my borderline symptoms? Is there more to recovery?

Maybe this is not a good question, but I was wondering if the therapy costs are free in the US, Canada or somewhere else, or do they charge for it? And how long does one therapy session usually take?

I guess it varies in all countries and in individual situations. I am in Canada and we have some therapy in counselling agencies and through the hospitals that is free. We have some sliding-scale fees in counselling agencies too but more and more now they are not able to offer very long-term therapy likely due to the costs of therapists and resources.

I am not sure about the U.S. but I do know that on email lists I have and in emails I received from lots of people with  BPD that many Americans with BPD aren't getting therapy at given points because they can't afford it. I think the same is true in Canada also, and likely all over the world.

I am not sure what therapists charge these days I am sure that really varies too.

I was very fortunate in my therapy travels that I did receive a lot of therapy at no financial cost or hardship.

I'm in Australia, and not sure if this applies to all Australian states, but I was referred to the mental health dept at the local public hospitals community centre and am now getting therapy and attending DBT for free, even though I work.

I have to say I'm very grateful for this.

Cheers, Jas

How nice for you - I hope it is going well Smiley
In Canada people with BPD can also access DBT treatment group programs for free - covered
under our provincial health care plans.

Not to long ago I inquired about the cost of therapy. I was told two different prices because there were two different therapist. One asked 100.00 for the first visit and 75.00 dollars for after visits. The other therapist asked for 95.00 doallars for the first visit and 65.00 dollars after visits. So as you can see each can vary in cost.

I have a disability insurance and I can get service through the state for little to free cost. However, I am not sure if there is anyone in my state who offers DBT. I attend group therapy. I'm not sure if this is helping me because it seems the present therapist has done nothing concerning bpd. I hope this helps.

Hi AJ,

I live in Toronto and I have been searching for DBT therapy groups that is covered under OHIP. Currently I only found a program at CAMH that is full. I was wondering if you can recommend any other types of therapies that dont cost anything. I am currently searching for therapy, and I live on my own. I have contacted a few private therapist whos hourly fee is simply too much for my budget.

Can you help?

Hi UnitedTarget,

You aren't that far from me Smiley

There aren't enough DBT programs in Ontario since we have over 2/3's of our country's entire population. And the programs that do exist do have a minimum of a two year waiting list more often than not. There are other effective types of therapy for BPD and really any therapist knowledgeable about adn trained to treat BPD who believes in your ability to get well can be very helpful. However, I do not know of any therapy that you can get for free. Life coaching can also be very helpful, but it isn't free either. Sorry I couldn't be of  more help with your question. Don't forget, however, that to some degree, you can help yourself by educatng your as much as you can about everything BPD. That said, in order to recover fully, therapy is a prt of that process at one point or another.

Keep looking for a therapist that has a sliding fee scale. Some agencies have sliding fee scales, however, they often have younger not as experienced counsellors working in there.
