I was told by my therapist she weinning me from her so I could use my skills I've learned. Where I attend group I'm only allowed 6 months for therapy. Is there a time limit for recovery??? Has anyone been told how long therapy is for us with bpd? Can anyone assist me with this issue? monk

I think you can't put a time limit on recovering from any mental illness. Everyone heals at a different pace, and the therapists and environment and life situations add to the variations.

There are so many different levels and really layers of recovery from BPD that to try to put a time limit on it would likely not do it justice or have any qualitative way of being accurate. I think recovery from BPD, and specifically the time it takes is highly individual. My recovery was approx. 8 years. There are behavior changes and important things learned that can create considerable shifts in and through DBT therapy for example, but I don't think anyone really recovers in one go-round of DBT or a 6 month period. However, in even that short of a period of time you can improve the quality of your life and your ability to cope.

The deepest layer of recovery, and the one that takes the longest, is that of actually changing and maintaining healthy relating.

I have had BPD patterns of relating every since I can remember.  Literally, since I was a young child.  I remember the feelings very clearly.  They were strong, like shocks in my body with so much sadness and fear.  The relational difficulty was at its peak in my 20's and 30's.  I am now 48.  I realized I am BPD only a year or so ago.  I can honestly say that my relational patterns have changed tremendously for the better in the past year since "The Realization".  (I know, dramatic, but that's what I am).  Understanding the patterns and how they were created and why is a huge factor for me.  So, it's been many many years of living within the pattern of BPD relating and a relatively short time to relief.  I changed my mindset from being a victim of BPD to celebrating it in any way I can find and thus taking control.  There is no rule for length of time to recovery.  It's up to you.
